On being a sojourner here….. recently I have found that my life is needing a little tweaking and some new inspiration and direction. God has been teaching me in this past year and a half. I left my book writing for a while because I had some real world living to do in order to come back to this place and hopefully take a direction that God wants me to take with this whole endeavor. So what has HE been teaching? How to find peace in HIM for one thing. How to take circumstances and see that HE is working in them and HE wants us to see that. And HE is trying to teach me over and over to learn to trust HIM more fully.
Finding peace with HIM and in HIM has required me to go look for HIM in HIS Word, my Bible. The more that I seek HIM there, the more that HE honors my time with HIM. Circumstances: a career change when I am very close to retiring already. About a year and a half ago, my stress level was very high, I was not enjoying my job as a teacher, but I still wanted to work with students, so I took a major salary cut (1/2) and went from teaching to being a teacher’s aide. I knew God would provide and it was hairy for a while and God said, “wait, my time is perfect”. So we did and I wondered many times if I had done the correct thing. Then this year, HE told us to sell our little refuge (cabin) at the lake. We put it on the market and two months later, it sold. With the money from this sale, we paid off the mortgage to our current home—HIS timing is perfect and have gotten out of the debt that I put us in by going to an aide position. I was wondering if I should go back to teaching and HE said, “look what I have provided and look at MY timing”, so I will remain as an aide. He wants my priorities on HIM now. I need to learn more about HIM and share that knowledge any way that I can. So this is what I am doing as I focus on my health and getting to know MY SAVIOUR in a whole new way. I will still be writing and sharing that here, but my focus may be changing in some ways. I am hoping that as I read scriptures, my ability to TRUST HIM more will become stronger.
So what do you do in your life to draw close to GOD? How has HE changed you through your attempts to follow HIM?
Oh, the joys of a blog, a book, and another full time job. First day of school for the kiddos and I spent the day in a kindergarten class. Enjoyable, but exhausting for the kids and the teachers. LOL!!! But we have all been there each of us in our own various spots and times.
As for the book, it is continuing to come along. My heroine is reluctant (and thoroughly ill-equipped) but sets out anyway to fulfill her destiny. Unfortunately, as soon as she gets to the plains, with no trees for protection and no place to hide, she and her brother are attacked by marauders, who survive and live in these plains by stealing from others. This is their source of life, which Terah and her brother stumble into. She and her brother are back to back with small knives in their hands, surrounded by these creatures, huge hulking things, when one reaches and grabs for her. She lets out a scream, which is heard by my hero. He has been avoiding all populations as he has just escaped from years of internment as a slave to a ruthless race of people. He really has no desire to get involved. But his mother’s teachings live inside him from his time as a boy of ten, before he was taken as a slave. He cannot ignore another in need, and so he races in to save her. Then let the fireworks begin as he gives her an earful for traveling without an appropriate escort and she gives him grief as well. We shall see in the coming days just how it gets resolved and what other challenges they may face.
Today, I am going to give my fellow writers a tip that I thought was truly brilliant, even though I had to hear it about 7 times in a three day writer’s conference period before it finally sank into this noggin’.
When beginning a novel, throw away your first chapter and start with the second chapter. Later, you can add the missing bits of the first chapter, errr… backstory in your dialogue or scene set-ups. For me, that was good advice. Rather than starting with my heroine in her home being pushed out to go on her quest, I was able to start with an action scene and introduce the hero at the same time as he does what heroes do, saves her from some marauders and then proceeds to chew her out for being so dense to travel without escort. Will she wimp out and agree with him or will she growl right back at him?
7/28/14 – Day One of My Blog
My purpose for writing this is to take you along on my journey of creating my first piece of fiction. Here I will share my thoughts, my rants and raves, my experiences and anything else that may be pertinent to this journey. I am fresh from my very first Writer’s Conference with Romance Writer’s of America. That’s not to say this piece of fiction that I am writing will be completely romance. As far as category goes, it will probably be more aligned with Young Adult, but it will have a love story in it because I can not help myself. This will be a parallel journey in some respects, as my heroine will also be taking her own journey, somewhat reluctantly. We will both be growing through our journeys and hope that you will join us.
Let me start my saying that I am a great fan of both JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. Both these Christian men were brilliant in their creations of fantastical worlds of good and evil. With that in mind, I hope to write a piece that combines their worlds. In the Land of Tolisen, darkness is ever encroaching on the natural light that comes from the lower earth provinces. Tera must answer her destiny and accept the first quest of seven in order to bring permanent light to Lower Earth. Will she accept her challenge? Will she be successful? What dangers will there be? How will she protect herself and if she does not go, then who will?
